Kindness, compassion and dignity
Staff genuinely cared for people. This was evident in the way they spoke of people as though they wanted them to succeed and they wanted to be part of that success. They showed an understanding of people’s fears and the need to build trust. Relatives were happy with the care provided. A relative told us, “So far it’s okay. He has his staff member who he is very close with. I would say very caring. [Staff name] loves him and understands him. He Is teaching other staff the same so they are trained when he is not there. Everything so far is good.”
Staff expressed a kind, caring attitude. They told us how they would knock of people’s bedroom doors before entering and try to ensure that people were dressed in an appropriate way. Some people’s care plans recorded how they liked their care to be provided and gave good information to staff on how they should provide care in line with people’s needs. People’s preferences were recorded, their likes, dislikes and specific information relating to them as a person. This all helped staff get to know people and in turn provide care to them in an appropriate way. We were unable to observe staff interacting with people as some people were out during the day. However, we saw one person being taken out by staff and they spent a lot of time ensuring that everything was ready for them so they could be taken out safely and with the correct support. We observed staff supporting this person to the car, talking to them all the time. A staff member said, “Now we can be careful and give our best care to [person’s name].” They added, “We have to respect their views and what they need. We have to support them. We knock on their doors first.”
We spoke with professionals around people’s care and how caring they felt staff were. A professional told us, “I go to the service on a weekly basis. I think staff are starting to know and understand him.”
We could not collect the evidence to score this evidence category as we did not observe care between staff and people.
