During a routine inspection

We spoke with six people or their representatives who used the service. We also observed the care and support provided to people during our visit.

People told us that they were happy living in the service and with the care and support that they were provided with. They said that the staff treated them with respect and were attentive to their needs. Comments made by people about the service that they were provided with included, 'They look after me so well. I'm very happy here'. Another person told us 'They are the best. They have improved'.

3 November 2011

During an inspection looking at part of the service

We visited the home on 4 November 2011. We spoke with five people who use the service. They were positive about the home and told us they liked living there. Two people told us they were looking forward to a fireworks party that was planned to take place on the afternoon of our visit. Decorations had been kept up from Halloween. One person told us they liked the decorations and enjoyed watching staff put them up.

We spent time observing how staff supported people in the large communal lounge and conservatory. We saw staff effectively communicate and involve people in making decisions about their care. It was clear that the staff on duty knew people living in the home well and were able to talk with them easily.

During an inspection looking at part of the service

The people we spoke with had different opinions about the service but all agreed they liked the carers. People living in the home told us they could ask for help if they needed it. One person described staff as being 'lovely'. A visitor was very positive about the end of life care provided for their relative.

One person told us they did not like living in the home, but they did not tells us why. Two people were reluctant to talk with us because they thought it may effect the service they were given.

During an inspection in response to concerns

Recent events have meant that a lot of other agencies have been visiting Cedar Lodge and speaking with staff and the people who live there. Mr Spendley told us that he was concerned that this had made people living in the home 'anxious'. We therefore decided not to talk with staff or people who live in the home during our visit on 14 April 2011. However, we did advise that we were available if people wanted to speak with us. Mr Spendley told us that all of the people living and working in Cedar Lodge knew we were on site but that no one had requested to speak with us. All of the people living in the home have been offered a review of their care from the local authority, Suffolk Adult Social Care services (ACS).

As we were leaving, we did stop and speak with a person living in the home who was returning from a walk. They said that they liked to get out regularly and were happy at Cedar Lodge. They told us that they had several periods of ill health but staff had helped them to recover and 'keep going'. They said they were 'very grateful for that'.

During an inspection in response to concerns

During our visit we spent time in the main lounge area. People were observed talking with staff and visitors and singing along to Christmas tunes. There was a relaxed and comfortable atmosphere. People living at the home were seen moving around the building and grounds freely. One person spent time outside. Two people said they chose to stay in their bedrooms for some of the day.

People told us they liked the Christmas decorations and lights and were looking forward to a Christmas party. They spoke about previous parties and how much they enjoyed them. One person was "looking forward to a dance".

People remembered the lift breaking down. One person said 'The girls used it by pressing the button manually'. They said they still went downstairs every day 'it took longer than usual but not an issue'. Two others said that they used the stairs and didn't need the lift.

One person said everything was 'okay' when the Registered Provider/Manager was away on holiday. They did not know who to speak to if they had any problems but 'didn't have any so there was no need'. One person asked for a letter to be delivered for them and said 'they are always helpful like that'. One person said they were happy sitting in a chair looking at the view. They liked the Registered Manager and the 'girls'. Another person said that there were 'enough staff for me'.
