We reviewed 1 quality statement for this key question. People were supported to keep in contact with family and friends, and visiting was promoted at any time. People were supported to be as independent as possible and make decisions about their daily lives. People were involved in planning their care and had a personalised care plan to guide staff in providing the support they required.

Independence, choice and control

We observed staff interacting with people in a friendly and attentive manner. People were treated with dignity and respect, and able to make choices about how they spent their day. People enjoyed visits from family and friends and a variety of social activities, such as Pilates, in the communal areas.

Staff knew people well and promoted decision-making whilst encouraging independence. Leaders told us involving people in their care was essential, as they knew themselves and what they wanted, better than anyone. Leaders told us family and friends were always welcome and technology was used to help people keep in touch with those who lived away.

People were able to have visitors in their room or communal areas, whenever they wished. Relatives confirmed they visited at different times, without giving notice. They said they always received a warm welcome. People told us they were able to make choices about their day-to-day activity and remain as independent as possible.

Each person had a detailed person-centred care plan, which demonstrated their needs and wishes. Systems were in place to review the plans on a monthly basis or as anything changed. This ensured the information was kept up to date and relevant. Each person was given a lead nurse, which ensured oversight but also a clear contact for family and friends.
