Independence, choice and control
People's support plans included information about how to promote their independence. They also provided information related to, for example, people's likes and dislikes, hobbies and interests, emotional support and religion to support person centered care.
People and relatives provided positive feedback in relation to the support received from the service. One relative told us; ‘I think it’s amazing to give her the ability to stay at home, she’s had pamper days, they do her hair in plaits, they make her smile and laugh and keep her confrontable.” One person told us; “Yes they listen, yes they do treat me with dignity and respect and respect my privacy.”
When we asked one staff member how they ensured people’s care was person centred, they told us they recognised that as human beings who made their own choices and decisions. They would ask them what they wanted, for example in relation to personal care, food and everything related to their support needs. In their PIR submission, the registered manager told us; “Our priority is to ensure that our clients are encouraged and supported to maintain their independence while receiving our compassionate, high-quality care.” In addition, they stated; “Our care and support gives our clients the opportunity to remain living in their own homes as opposed to being admitted to a residential care or nursing home. This ensures that they continue to form a part of their community and maintain their relationship with family members.”
