Independence, choice and control
Staff supported people to be independent and encouraged people to do as much as they could for themselves. One member of staff said, “We try to get everyone to do as much as they can for themselves. Sometimes we have to think outside the box. We have supported a person to move into an independent living scheme.”
People and relatives confirmed they were encouraged and supported to be involved in the care planning process and empowered to make choices about their care, ensuring their independence was maintained. One person told us, “I am grateful the staff respect my decisions, even when sometimes they don’t agree with me. It's important I can make my own choices and have my care my way.”
We saw that staff encouraged people to be independent and do tasks for themselves which made them feel valued and useful. For example, we saw that people were supported throughout the lunchtime to eat and drink independently. Some people in the service looked after their own medicines and others were supported do as much as they could in relation to their personal care.
People’s communication needs were assessed before a care package commenced to ensure they were fully supported to understand their rights and able to make decisions about their care. Care plans contained up to date information about people’s needs including their choices and preferences. They contained information for staff guidance to promote people’s independence in areas such as mobility and managing their medicines.
