During a routine inspection

During our visit we spoke with five people who lived at the care home, one person who was thinking about living at the service and two relatives of people who use receive a service. We also spoke with the manager, assistant manager and three support workers. People we spoke with told us that they liked living at the care home. One person told us, 'I've settled here, it's my home.' Other people told us they liked the meals and the staff who supported them.

Relatives we spoke with told us that the care home was well managed and commented that staff and management kept them informed and involved about their family members.

We saw within care records and from speaking to people who received a service that they were encouraged by staff to make choices about the care and support they received.

One person told us about their active life in the community including independent shopping trips 'to buy things for myself'. Staff told us that decision making in the best interests of individuals who had been assessed as lacking mental capacity took place in consultation with relatives and involved professionals. Relatives we spoke with confirmed consultation and involvement.

We noted warm and respectful interaction between people who lived at the care home and staff who supported them. We observed that the environment was clean, bright and well decorated using art work of people who lived there and photographs documenting enjoyable shared activities and holidays. This meant that people are well supported and the environment was safe, suitable and homely

We examined care planning and health and safety records which showed that care being delivered was effective and that the environment was safe and well maintained.

During a routine inspection

We spoke with two of the 11 people living at the service and we observed several others in the communal dining area and kitchen going about their day to day lives. We also spoke with three staff and the manager to help us assess compliance.

The people we spoke with both told us they liked living at the service. They said the staff treated them well and they said they chose what to do with their free time and how to spend their day. Their independence was encouraged. One person told us, 'I like my life.'

Both of the people we spoke with told us they had support from staff when they needed it. Care was planned well and people were supported by staff who understood their needs and met these. We found people's health care needs were met well and that their social and recreational needs were met.

The systems in place for medication were safe and effective and people received their medicines as their doctor prescribed.

There were enough staff on duty to make sure people's needs were met effectively and people living at the service said they liked the staff.

The people we spoke with said they had not made any complaints, though they knew they could. One person said, 'I am happy here, I have no worries.'

During an inspection in response to concerns

We visited this service because we were concerned that we had not visited for some time. We wanted to make sure that people were getting good care and that the service was compliant.

One person we spoke with told us he liked living at the service. He told us he got on well with the people living at the house and the staff.He told us he made his own drinks and snacks and helped with the cleaning. Another person told us they did their chores and had just done the washing up. We saw people making themselves drinks and snacks. This shows people were encouraged to do daily chores and to be independent.

The people we spoke with said the staff met their needs and talked to them about the help they needed. We thought the support plans were very good and gave staff clear advice about how to support people with their needs.

We saw the staff doing lots of things with people living at the service, including playing football, playing dominoes and going out to the park for a walk. One person told us they liked going to see Derby County play and went to home games with staff.
