Independence, choice and control

Score: 3

There was no evidence of restrictive practices. People were independently mobile around the service. There was ease of access to all areas. We saw people leaving the care home and going for a walk around the gardens by the seafront. We were present at lunchtime and saw people sit where they chose and speak to who they liked. People made their own decisions about all day to day activities and came and went as they wanted. We saw staff assist people when needed, staff spoke politely to people, asked for consent and checked people understood how the support would be given.

Care plans included information on people’s communication needs, such as if they were hard of hearing or needed glasses. This ensured staff were able to include people in conversation in ways they could access and understand. People had assessments to self-manage their medication. Independence with medicines management was encouraged. We looked at a medicine risk assessment which gave the outcome that a person was able to manage their medicines independently.

Staff told us the Royal Garden Hotel was run more like a hotel than a care home. They said people had low level needs, and staff appreciated this was where people had chosen to live, and they worked for the people staying there. Staff respected people’s choices and encouraged their independence. A staff member said, “People are very independent and are able to articulate themselves well. They let us know their likes and personal choices and we respect these.”

People were able to live their lives with as much independence as they liked. An apartment within the home enabled a couple to live together with privacy and autonomy. People could choose to have meals provided or make their own if they wished. Many people managed their own medicines. People were complimentary about the food, a person said, “Food is excellent here.”
