We observed staff were respectful when engaging with people. We saw there was good regard for people’s privacy and dignity. People were supported to be independent wherever possible.

We found people’s medicines were managed safely at the home. Staff who handled medication had undertaken training in the safe management of medicines. Medicines were stored securely and accurate records were maintained to show when they had been administered.

The premises were appropriately maintained. Bedrooms were single occupancy and personalised, to make them homely. The building was kept warm and well lit. The premises complied with fire safety standards.

Equipment had been provided to help meet the needs of people with disabilities. This had been serviced to ensure it was safe to use. Staff received training in moving and handling, including use of equipment. This enabled them to assist people safely and prevent injury.

Care plans showed that people were involved in making decisions regarding their care and support. We observed the cares generally obtaining people’s consent before giving any care. The care given by staff reflected what was documented in people’s care plans, and care records were regularly audited.

People using the service told us that they felt safe and had no concerns. We saw that the premises and environment were generally safe and clean. We observed health and safety information, and the staff we spoke with could explain how to reduce the risk of infection.

During the visit we observed staff speaking with people in a caring and respectful manner. The people using the service spoke highly of the carers and management team and said there were always plenty of things to do at Chalk Leys.

This home had various methods that were used to ensure the quality of the care was assessed. These included meetings, reviews, surveys and audits. The records for these were available. Following an adjustment to how information was stored people’s personal records were kept safe and confidential.
