Freedom to speak up
Staff told us they could raise concerns about people with the management team. One staff member said, “Any concerns I would raise with my General Manger or regional support, there is also a whistle blowing number available 24hours”. Another staff member said, “We have numerous posters throughout the home with phone numbers to call.” A staff member told us staff were free to share ideas on improvement for the service and explained how one of their ideas had been implemented.
The provider sought feedback from staff via surveys and advised the commission of a recent addition of an online survey to seek further engagement from staff. The providers whistleblowing policy promoted an open positive culture around speaking up. There is a clear process for staff to follow and guidance for where/how to escalate concerns, including a phone number where staff can whistle blow anonymously. The policy included signposting to the human resources e-mail if needed for support and independent employee assistance was available 24/7. Website links to Gov, NMC and CQC were detailed and there was a process flow chart for stages of investigations into concerns for staff information. Speak up posters were displayed for staff information which included a photo and contact details for 3 speak up guardians for the home that staff could contact directly with concerns.
