People said, “I organise my day to suit me, luckily I am pretty independent” and, “I like to be up early and go to bed early and with a bit of effort I can do this by myself.”

The manager told us that choices for people living at the service was embedded in the support people received. They had details of what people’s past choices were and they reviewed this in line with the provider’s policy each time the care needs were reviewed. Staff told us that they respected choice, whether someone wished to spend most of their time in their room or to go to the dining room, what they would like to wear and eat or drink. People who were able to make their own decision about their ongoing care were supported to do so. A person was recently admitted to the service under a discharge process from the local acute hospital. They decided they felt safe and supported and made the decision to become a permanent resident.

We observed staff gave people choice and control; and promoted their independence. People spent their time how they preferred to. During lunch we observed people choosing where they wanted to sit, and being shown choices of meals and a selection of drinks were offered. When people needed support to eat their lunch, staff sat with them and supported them discreetly.
