Date of assessment 21 February to 28 March 2024. We carried out this assessment because we had received some concerns about the care and treatment people had received. People felt they received safe care and support, which was provided by staff who were skilled and met their needs. Staff were aware of safeguarding processes and felt that, where improvements to people’s health, safety and wellbeing were identified, these were actioned immediately. People and staff spoke about the positive impact the new manager was having on the home. People were provided with person centred care involving others that was based on their preferences. The provider helped ensure people had good continuity of care where they moved between services. People were supported to have good end of life care and their decisions were respected. The provider ensured a well maintained and safe environment. However, we found a breach of the legal regulations in relations to governance and how the quality of the service was assessed to ensure that it identified all areas where improvements where required and actioned. Although most risks to people had been identified they were not always acted upon. We have asked the provider for an action plan in response to the concerns found at this assessment. The majority of observations during the visit to the service were positive, we observed some interactions that did not uphold good standards of dignity and compassion. The provider and manager were responsive to feedback given and had started to take actions to address the concerns found.

People and their relatives were mainly positive about the support they received from this service. People told us that they felt safe. One person told us, "I do feel safe here, there are plenty of people around to take care of me" another person told us, "I feel perfectly safe here, the [staff] all keep an eye on me.” People told us they received the support they required and could see healthcare professionals when needed. One person told us, "The Doctor comes in every Thursday, they are marvellous. You can ask to see them if you need to. There is an in-house hairdresser and chiropodist so you have everything you need. They have provided an escort to take me to the dentist." People told us they were usually treated with dignity and respect and when they had any issues, they had been able to raise them, and action had been taken. One person told us, "I think the nursing care is the best and they make you feel welcome, you are not a burden" another person told us, "There was a carer that I didn’t like but I don’t see her now." People were mostly positive about the support they received with personal care. One Person told us, "Staff are very respectful. They insist on draping a towel over me. They always shut the door and curtains. I feel comfortable with them." Another person stated, "Sometimes they do leave me exposed, uncovered which isn’t very nice." One person told us, "They put me on the commode or the toilet and then they leave the bathroom door open and the door into my room so anyone could wander in. I don’t really feel it is very private." People told us that they thought there were usually enough staff available to help them when needed but there had been occasions this wasn't the case. One person told us,"[Staff] mostly answer the bell within 10 minutes. There have been times when I have waited longer but thankfully it hasn’t caused me any problems” another person told us, "I have got my call bell here and you do sometimes have to wait a long time."
