Independence, choice and control
We saw people make choices throughout our assessment visit. These included deciding what they wanted to eat and drink and the activities they engaged in. People’s privacy was protected. We observed staff knocking on people’s bedroom doors and waited for their consent before entering. Staff referred to people by their preferred names.
People told us they were supported to make choices how they received their care and support and how they spent their time. People spoke enthusiastically about the activities they engaged in and the coordinator who led the sessions. One person said, “The activity coordinator is lovely, and I love doing art with them.” Another person said, “I like the activities and the singers that come here. I always look forward to them coming.”
Person centred plans detailed people’s preferences. These were regularly updated and included people’s likes and dislikes, the things they liked to do and any aspirations they might have.
The manager, nurses, care staff and team knew people well. A keyworking system was in place at the service. A keyworker is a member of staff with specific responsibilities with people including personalising bedrooms, maintaining family contact, and establishing people’s preferences.
