Caring
At our last inspection concerns were found relating to a lack of person centred care. Enough improvement was made at this inspection and the service was delivering more personalised care and support. People told us they were well cared for and staff offered them choices and promoted their independence. Improvements were required to enable all people to access outside spaces.
This service scored 20 (out of 100) for this area. Find out what we look at when we assess this area and How we calculate these scores.

Independence, choice and control
People living in the upper floors could not freely access the outside garden due to the building layout, this restricted people's access to an outdoor space. People and relatives told us the activities on offer had improved, where people were cared for in bed, 1:1 time was offered by the activities co Ordinator. One person said, “I have been out to church today.” And another person said, “They do lots of activities, such as crochet, knitting and karaoke, I like to chill in my room and listen to my I pad.” People had personal effects in their own rooms, such as pictures and furniture. One person had painted their room to reflect their favourite football teams colours. People told us they made their own choices and staff treated them well. One person said, “I know the staff very well, they are nice to me and I can talk to them.” Another person said, “I can do a lot for myself, but the staff are there if I need them.” And a relative said, “[Relative] can be difficult, but the staff work with them, they are caring. I can’t praise them enough.”
An activities co Ordinator provided activities and social events which were important and meaningful to people. They were passionate about their role and told us how they supported less mobile people to be engaged, such as providing choices of a hand massage or reading with them. Staff told us how they promoted people’s choices and independence. Comments included, “We get to know people and find out about their likes and dislikes” and, “We are more person centred and people do a lot more now, we work with families a lot more and people tell us about their lives.”
We observed kind and caring interactions between staff and people. For example, we observed staff supporting one person who liked to sit on the floor, they sat with them and chatted, they provided the person with a pillow and a blanket to ensure they were comfortable. We also saw staff offering people choices of music and observed another staff sitting with a person and looking through a photo album.
Staff had worked closely with people and completed more in depth, personalised care plans. Staff had access to care records via online systems and recorded peoples day to day care. Records contained information about people's choices, preferences, hobbies and interests and who was important to them. Relatives were involved in people's reviews and told us they had input into their loved ones care. Managers daily checks focused on people's well-being and what could be implemented to improve people's well-being.
