All Inspections

3 January 2013

During a routine inspection

We were unable to ask people about their views of living in the home because of their complex communication needs. However, we observed staff talking to people about how they wanted to spend their time and supporting them to make choices about their daily living. All six people living in the home went out during our visit. Three people went shopping to Gloucester with staff in the minibus and three people went out to the local shops with staff. Staff demonstrated a clear understanding of involving people in day-to-day decisions about their care and interactions with people were respectful and at the pace of the individual.

Care plans were personalised to each individual's needs and detailed the wishes of the person and how they wanted to receive their support. Risk assessments had been completed where necessary and all care records were regularly reviewed.

We spoke with three members of staff and they confirmed that they had received relevant training for their role and they were able to access any additional training if they requested it. Care was provided in an environment that was safe, well maintained and met people's needs.

During a routine inspection

We were unable to communicate with the people using the service due to their complex communication needs.

We observed people enjoying musical entertainment and returning from a trip out. People looked relaxed and some people were smiling.

We also observed people being helped to eat their lunch in the dining room and in the sensory garden. Staff were attentive, talking to people and explaining what the food was.

A relative told us that the staff were very good, they treated people with respect and all the person's healthcare needs were met. They also told us the person was "happy" there, as they had not displayed any signs of fear or unhappiness since they had settled into the home.
