Good

Updated 29 August 2024

People were cared for by staff who were kind and respectful. Staff promoted peoples’ choice and independence in a personalised way. For example, people living with complex dementia often had complex behaviours which staff sought to understand and enable their freedom. Policies and practice supported people to have maximum choice and control over their lives.

Independence, choice and control

Score: 3

Care was personalised and staff worked to deliver person centred care which maintained peoples’ dignity with understanding. One person said, “I’m happy at this home, got to choose all my own things and décor in my room. The staff come when I ring. I’m well looked after. I like staying in my room watching TV mostly. I get nice food that I ask for.”

Staff gave examples of how they gave people choice and control, using visual prompts as necessary.

We saw how staff were respectful if a person did not want to receive support at any time, with staff returning later or engaging them in conversation to put them at ease.

Peoples’ choices and preferences were included in their care plan. Details such as what topics people liked to talk about ensured distress and anxiety was minimised. For example, one person did not like loud spaces or personal questions, whilst another person enjoyed talking about their family and dogs.
