Our view of the service
Eastcroft Nursing Home is a nursing home providing nursing, personal care and accommodation to older people with physical and health related support needs, some of whom also live with dementia. The assessment was completed between 16 January and 1 February 2024. An unannounced site visit to the home was carried out on 16 January 2024. We reviewed Safe, Effective and Well-Led quality statements as part of this assessment. The provider made significant improvements around safety and management of the service since our last inspection. Staff training and induction were reviewed to better support staff in their roles. The management team strengthened the governance and oversight systems in the home which improved people’s overall experience of care and their safety. The provider was no longer in breach of regulations in Safe, Effective and Well-Led at the point of this assessment. The rating at our last inspection, carried out under our old methodology (published 11 May 2023), was inadequate. At this assessment we found the service had improved and the rating is now requires improvement based on the review of the quality statements in Safe, Effective and Well-Led only.
People's experience of this service
People living and receiving care in the home were not always able to provide full feedback around their experience. Hence, we spoke with their relatives and representatives as well as observed people’s care during the visit to the service. We received overall positive feedback about safety and effectiveness of people’s care and the management of the home. People’s relatives told us staff knew their loved one’s needs and supported them in safe ways. One relative told us, “I think staff really understand [person’s] needs; they are at significant risk of falls risk but has never had a fall since being here, so from that I believe the staff understand [person’s] risk.” People’s relatives felt the home was safe, pleasant and well-maintained and they told us they could visit whenever they wished to. Comments from relatives included, “I would say [relative] feels very safe – this is obvious in their demeanour, they think they are in their own home and are calm and settled. I trust all the staff implicitly”; “There always seem to be enough staff; there is continuity of staff and they are just lovely. I am a big fan of this house.” People’s relatives told us the care provided to their loved ones had positive impact on them. One relative said, “[Person’s] dignity has been restored since coming to Eastcroft. Their needs were properly assessed and as a result, they are very calm. This is a home where people are cared for as if they are family.” People’s relatives told us staff asked people for their consent and encouraged them to make their own choices. One relative said, “I see staff taking their time with [person] and never rushing them into making a decision. They always wait for a reply.” People’s relatives were complimentary about the management and the communication with the home. Some relatives told us they would like their loved ones to have more opportunities to go out.
