Independence, choice and control
People were able to make choices about their day to day lives. One person told us, “You can do what you like.” People were able to see friends and family at any time. Visitors said they were always made welcome.
Staff told us people were able to make choices about what they did each day. One member of staff said, “We are always offering choices. It’s up to them what they do.” Activity staff said they tried to provide activities around people’s known interests and likes. They said they arranged for entertainers at the home and trips out. They told us all activities were open to all but there was no pressure for people to join in.
Since the last inspection activities and social stimulation had improved, this led to people being more animated and alert. Throughout our visits we saw people had access to activities and visitors. This included an afternoon tea and cake party with people and their families.
The management had worked with staff to make sure care and support was more person centred than previously. When people moved to the home, they, or their representatives, were asked to complete a document called ‘This is me.’ This gave personal information about lifestyle choices, personal preferences and highlighted things that were important to them.
