Our view of the service

Date of assessment 15 May to 24 May 2024. Kingdom House is a care home providing accommodation for people who require personal and nursing care. The service can support up to 8 people. At the time of our assessment there were 5 people living at Kingdom House. This assessment was triggered by concerns we received about the service and commenced with a site visit on 14 May and 15 May 2024 and the assessment ended on the 24 May 2024. During this time, we reviewed documents on and off site and communicated with staff, leaders, and visiting professionals. We assessed a total of 25 quality statements from the safe, caring, responsive and well-led key questions and found areas of concern. The scores for these areas have been combined with scores based on the key question ratings from the last inspection. The last rated inspection under our previous methodology was published on 18 June 2022 and was rated requires improvement overall. Since our last inspection the service has deteriorated further. We found 3 breaches in regulation relating to safe care and treatment, staffing, and good governance. At the time of our inspection there was no registered manager in post. The home had been without a registered manager since April 2023. There was no stable management team in place, and this had created lack of leadership. Systems had not been effective in identifying concerns we found during this assessment. We have asked the provider for an action plan in response to the concerns found at this assessment. In instances where CQC have decided to take civil or criminal enforcement action against a provider, we will publish this information on our website after any representations and/ or appeals have been concluded.

People's experience of this service

People demonstrated they felt safe; our observations supported that people had a built a good working relationship with some staff members and appeared comfortable with them. People’s relatives and representatives told us they all felt people were happy living at Kingdom House and that staff were nice. One relative said, “The place is brilliant, absolutely wonderful. Another said, “Oh yes, they do seem caring. The fact that [my relative] seems to be very happy there and is calm, tells me there’s nothing worrying. We received mixed feedback on how involved people and representatives were in the relative’s health and wellbeing. Two relatives said they had some concerns about the lack of involvement in health needs relating to their loved ones. One relative said, “They don’t really involve me with professionals as they should, but I know him inside out and they don’t. They should think to involve me because I asked them many times.” Some relatives and representatives were not aware of the management arrangements, or changes and felt they could be better involved. One relative said, “What I need is that I can be involved more, and I need to be informed more.” Overall, feedback was mixed as some relatives were generally happy with the care and others said there was areas that could be improved. While the people we spoke to expressed that they were generally happy with their care, our assessment found elements of care did not meet the expected standards.
