During a routine inspection
Everyone with whom we spoke told us that they liked Rebecca Court. They told us they were satisfied with the level of choice and control they had in their daily lives. We observed that people were consulted about their care. Staff always asked whether people needed or wanted help and gave them time to respond.
People told us they had opportunities to influence some aspects of the service, for example, through attending residents meetings. People, whom we asked, were familiar with the concept of dignity in care and we were told that there had been discussions with staff about the subject. One person told us, "We must have independence, dignity, pride and respect and we have that here." Another person told us, "They give you your dignity; they don't treat you like a child." One of the people using the service had been involved in a short film aimed at promoting dignity in care homes.
People with whom we spoke said that staff understood their health and care needs and they were satisfied with the care they received. One person said, "You can get the best of help and still feel independent."
People were happy with the level of social and recreational activities. We noted that many people were busy throughout the day of our inspection. Some were engaged in conversation with other people using the service, or with staff. Others pursued individual interests such as reading or were invited to attend group activities.
At lunchtime during our visit we observed that people were given a choice of meals. They could decide where they wanted to eat. People were given the level of assistance they needed and the meal time was relaxed and unhurried. Comments about the meals were positive. One person told us, "There is a very good selection of meals," and another said, "I can't find fault with the food."
The people whom we asked told us they felt safe in the home. We were told that if anyone was unhappy or were not being treated right they would be able to tell the manager. People told us they believed any complaints would be dealt with. One person said, "The manager will always listen and if there is a problem she will sort it out."
The people with whom we spoke were satisfied with the general environment and with their bedrooms. We were told that the home was always warm enough and it was kept clean.
Comments about the staff team were positive. People told us that the staff worked hard.
