Caring
We assessed 1 quality statement in the caring key question and found areas of good practice and concern. The scores for these areas have been combined with scores based on the rating from the last inspection, which was good. Though the assessment of these areas indicated areas of good practice since the last inspection, our rating for the key question has changed to requires improvement. People were not consistently treated with kindness, compassion and dignity. People’s friends and families were free to visit them with no restrictions. People were encouraged to take part in a range of activities both at the service and in the community which helped support their independence, health and well-being.
This service scored 62 (out of 100) for this area. Find out what we look at when we assess this area and How we calculate these scores.
Kindness, compassion and dignity
People did not express any concerns regarding their treatment but feedback from relatives was mixed. One person told us that staff did not engage with people which demonstrated a lack of compassion and dignity. Another relative said, “Staff in general, especially the staff that know [Name] well have always been kind and considerate” People living at the home were not all able to communicate their feelings about how they were treated but those who could did not tell us about any concerns.
We spoke with staff about what they did that demonstrated they treated people with kindness, compassion and dignity. One staff member told us, “I treat people the way I want to be treated.” Another said, “I treat people with kindness, dignity, and respect by listening attentively, acknowledging their preferences, and involving them in decision-making. For instance, I ensure privacy during personal care routines and address individuals by their preferred names”.
Observations of people being treated with kindness, compassion and dignity were not consistent. We observed one person, who receives one-to-one support, the staff member had put a projector on, but the image was upside down and they had left them viewing it like this. Another staff member was seen to actively protect a person’s dignity when they experienced a continence issue. The level of engagement and how attentive staff were to people’s needs and engaging with them in a kind and dignified way varied greatly between staff members.
