During an inspection looking at part of the service

We carried out this announced focused inspection on 8 March 2022 under section 60 of the Health and Social Care Act 2008 as part of our regulatory functions. We planned the inspection to check whether the registered practice was meeting the legal requirements in the Health and Social Care Act 2008 and associated regulations. The inspection was led by a Care Quality Commission, (CQC), inspector who was supported by a specialist dental adviser.

To get to the heart of patients’ experiences of care and treatment, we usually ask five key questions, however due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and to reduce time spent on site, only the following three questions were asked:

• Is it safe?

• Is it effective?

• Is it well-led?

These questions form the framework for the areas we look at during the inspection.

Our findings were:

  • The dental clinic appeared to be visibly clean and well-maintained.
  • The practice had infection control procedures which reflected published guidance.
  • Staff knew how to deal with medical emergencies. The processes to check appropriate medicines and life-saving equipment were available but needed improvement.
  • The practice had systems to help them manage risk to patients and staff.
  • Safeguarding processes were in place and staff knew their responsibilities for safeguarding vulnerable adults and children.
  • Improvements could be made to the staff recruitment procedures.
  • The clinical staff provided patients’ care and treatment in line with current guidelines. The auditing of these could be improved.
  • Patients were treated with dignity and respect and staff took care to protect their privacy and personal information.
  • Staff provided preventive care and supported patients to ensure better oral health.
  • There was effective leadership and a culture of continuous improvement.
  • Staff felt involved and supported and worked as a team.
  • Staff and patients were asked for feedback about the services provided.

Background

Revive Dental Care, Monton is in Eccles, Manchester and provides NHS and private dental care and treatment for adults and children.

There is level access to the practice for people who use wheelchairs and those with pushchairs. Car parking spaces are available near the practice.

The dental team includes four dentists, six dental nurses of which four are trainees, three dental therapists, two receptionists and a practice manager. The practice has five treatment rooms.

During the inspection we spoke with one dentist, one dental hygiene therapist, two dental nurses, the receptionists, the practice manager and a company compliance lead. We looked at practice policies and procedures and other records about how the service is managed.

The practice is open:

Monday to Friday 8.10am to 1pm and 2pm to 6pm

There were areas where the provider could make improvements. They should:

  • Implement an effective system of checks of medical emergency equipment and medicines taking into account the guidelines issued by the Resuscitation Council (UK) and the General Dental Council.

  • Take action to ensure audits have documented learning points and the resulting improvements can be demonstrated.

  • Implement an effective recruitment procedure to ensure that appropriate checks are completed prior to new staff commencing employment at the practice.

During a routine inspection

One patient who used the service told us: "The staff here are very friendly. They explain exactly what is happening, they also provide you with the dental plan of the treatment which also provides oral hygiene advice". Another patient said "I fully understand the treatments and options offered. The staff are wonderful".

One patient told us: "I find it very friendly, very clean and very accommodating with appointments. I have no concerns with the standard of service, it is very professional". Another patient said; "The staff are very good, friendly and professional. I would recommend this place".

Treatments were undertaken in an environment which was modern, clean and maintained to a high standard. There were detailed infection control policies and procedures in place such as hand hygiene, blood spillage and reprocessing of dental instruments.

We looked at six staff files and found that they evidenced that staff had received appropriate training to undertake their roles and responsibilities and also maintain their continued professional development (CPD).

We saw evidence that regular audits were taking place to monitor quality, these included infection control, x-ray and a waste disposal audit.
