All Inspections

6 July 2023

During a routine inspection

We carried out this announced comprehensive inspection on 6 July 2023 under section 60 of the Health and Social Care Act 2008 as part of our regulatory functions.

We planned the inspection to check whether the registered practice was meeting the legal requirements in the Health and Social Care Act 2008 and associated regulations.

The inspection was led by a Care Quality Commission (CQC) inspector who was supported by a specialist dental advisor.

To get to the heart of patients’ experiences of care and treatment, we always ask the following 5 questions:

  • Is it safe?
  • Is it effective?
  • Is it caring?
  • Is it responsive to people’s needs?
  • Is it well-led?

These questions form the framework for the areas we look at during the inspection.

Our findings were:

  • The dental clinic appeared clean and well-maintained.
  • The practice had infection control procedures which reflected published guidance.
  • Staff knew how to deal with medical emergencies. Appropriate medicines and life-saving equipment were available.
  • The practice had systems to manage risks for patients, staff, equipment and the premises.
  • Safeguarding processes were in place and staff knew their responsibilities for safeguarding vulnerable adults and children.
  • The practice had staff recruitment procedures which reflected current legislation.
  • Clinical staff provided patients’ care and treatment in line with current guidelines.
  • Patients were treated with dignity and respect. Staff took care to protect patients’ privacy and personal information.
  • Staff provided preventive care and supported patients to ensure better oral health.
  • The appointment system worked efficiently to respond to patients’ needs.
  • The frequency of appointments was agreed between the dentist and the patient, giving due regard to National Institute of Health and Care Excellence (NICE) guidelines.
  • There was effective leadership and a culture of continuous improvement.
  • Staff felt involved, supported and worked as a team.
  • Staff and patients were asked for feedback about the services provided.
  • Complaints were dealt with positively and efficiently.
  • The practice had information governance arrangements.

Background

Narborough Dental Practice is in the village of Narborough in Leicestershire and provides NHS and private dental care and treatment for adults and children.

There is step free access to the practice for people who use wheelchairs and those with pushchairs. Car parking spaces, including dedicated parking for disabled people, are available a short distance from the practice. The practice has made reasonable adjustments to support patients with access requirements.

The dental team includes 1 dentist and 1 nurse who is also the practice manager. The practice has 2 treatment rooms.

During the inspection we spoke with the dentist and the dental nurse / practice manager. We looked at practice policies, procedures and other records to assess how the service is managed.

The practice is open:

Monday to Thursday from 8.40am to 5pm.

The practice had taken steps to improve environmental sustainability. For example, they had developed and implemented an environmental sustainability policy which included guidance on recycling, power usage, water usage and ethical / greener purchasing practices.

15 March 2013

During a routine inspection

As part of our inspection on this service we spoke with five people working at the service including the provider and the practice manager. We spoke with two dental nurses and an associate dentist.

We were not able to speak with any people who used the service as the practice was not open to patients at the time of our visit.

The staff we spoke with, who were employed by the practice, were all happy with the terms and conditions of their employment and described a robust recruitment procedure to us. They were able to evidence to us that their on-going professional development was being supported by the practice and they told us that they enjoyed working at the surgery. None of the staff we spoke with had any criticism to make about the care and treatment being delivered. One dental nurse said: "I really like working here. I really like the practice. It's a good practice. The patients have been coming here for years." They went on to comment that: "I've never been to a dentist that gives out so much dietary advice."

The provider showed us the policies, procedures and practices used by the surgery in relation to the outcome areas we inspected. We found that these were adequately recorded and maintained to ensure that safe and appropriate care and treatment was being delivered at the practice.
