On the day of our inspection the dental surgery was open for enquiries and emergencies but no patients were seen.

We saw that people were protected from the risk of infection because appropriate guidance had been followed.

There were effective recruitment and selection processes in place.

We saw that the provider had systems in place to identify, assess and manage risks to the health, safety and welfare of people who used the service.

We looked at infection control procedures and saw that these did not always follow Health Technical Memorandum (HTM) 01-05 guidance. HTM 01-05 is guidance from The Department of Health on decontamination in primary care dental practices.

There was limited evidence that appropriate checks had been undertaken prior to staff commencing work at the practice.

There was limited evidence of actions taken to address shortfalls that had been identified. A legionella risk assessment had been completed in 2012. There was an action plan of work that was required but there was no evidence of actions being taken to address the shortfalls identified in the action plan.
