During a routine inspection
We looked at patient records where the dentist had recorded their examination of soft tissues, teeth and other relevant observations. One person told us that they were aware of the dentist checking all areas of their mouth and the dentist had explained why the examination of their gums, cheeks and tongue was necessary.
The dental nurse explained accurately the processes and procedures in place to decontaminate instruments. They also described the checks they carried out to ensure that decontamination equipment was functioning properly. We saw records of the checks that were made by staff. This meant the provider was assured that decontamination equipment was operating effectively.
The practice sought feedback from their patients in the form of a satisfaction survey; the most recent took place in July 2013. Comments included: 'We feel part of the team ourselves.'
Staff told us that at staff meetings they were able to discuss and offer suggestions for improvements within the practice. They also told us that as they were a small service they were all involved in the day to day running of the practice and had daily discussions. Any suggestions for improvement could be implemented immediately.
