During an inspection looking at part of the service

At our last inspection of Hardwick Dental Practice in May 2013 we identified some concerns with the recruitment of staff. We carried out this follow up inspection to make sure that improvements had been made.

At this inspection we found that improvements had been made. We found that the policies and procedures relating to the recruitment and employment of staff had been reviewed and updated. We saw that there was now more information about the need for disclosure and barring service (DBS) checks for specific job roles.

We also found that pre employment procedures had been stregthened to ensure that the required pre employment checks were carried out. We found that appropriate policies and procedures were in place for the recruitment and employment of staff.

During a routine inspection

We spoke with three people who used the service. They were all satisfied with the care and treatment provided. They told us, "The staff are respectful to me.'; 'I've never had any problems' and, 'The staff are nice and treat me well.' We found that people's privacy, dignity and independence were respected.

People experienced care, treatment and support that met their needs and protected their rights.

We found that there were effective systems in place to reduce the risk and spread of infection. People who used the service had received their treatment in premises which maintained appropriate standards of cleanliness and hygiene.

People were cared for, or supported by, suitably qualified, skilled and experienced staff. However the provider had not completed appropriate pre employment checks and therefore did not operate effective recruitment procedures.

We found that there was an effective complaints system available.
