Independence, choice and control
People and relatives told us people’s independence, choice and control was promoted. A person said, “I like to choose my own clothes and the carers do everything else for me.” Another person said, “The staff are very good and supportive.” A third person said, “The carers are polite and happy to help and will do anything I ask. They check if I need anything before they leave.” A relative told us, “My loved one is encouraged by the carers to do as much as they can for themselves. The carers check and discuss what they are doing before they do it, my loved one isn’t keen on the personal care and the carers motivate and encourage them.”
Staff told us how they encouraged people to maintain their independence and giving them control they want in their lives. One staff member told us how they encouraged people to do things themselves and sought the person’s permission when support was required. They went on to tell us about how they would help a person explore their potential and how they engaged with other services such as occupational therapists and physiotherapists in order to seek professional guidance in maintaining people’s independence.
Care plans for people were person centred, showing people had choice and control over the care they received. For example, about giving people choices about what they had for breakfast when this was prepared for them. They also set out what people could do for themselves and what they required support with, which helped to promote their independence.
