Equity in access
Staff described the reasonable adjustments they had made to ensure the practice was accessible and how patients who were wheelchair users were assisted into the practice over the small step if appropriate. Staff were clear about the importance of providing emotional support to patients when delivering care. For example, they would provide time for patients who were anxious to relax before commencing treatment.
The practice supported more vulnerable members of society such as patients living with dementia. The practice displayed its opening hours outside the practice. The practice provided telephone numbers for patients needing emergency dental treatment during the working day and when the practice was not open. At the time of our assessment, patients who needed an urgent appointment were offered one in a timely manner. When the practice was unable to offer an urgent appointment, they worked with partner organisations to support urgent access for patients. However, staff had not carried out a disability access audit to assess how they could improve access for patients.
