All Inspections

19 May 2022

During a routine inspection

We carried out this announced focused inspection on 19 May 2022 under section 60 of the Health and Social Care Act 2008 as part of our regulatory functions. We planned the inspection to check whether the registered practice was meeting the legal requirements in the Health and Social Care Act 2008 and associated regulations. The inspection was led by a Care Quality Commission, (CQC), inspector who was supported by a specialist dental adviser.

To get to the heart of patients’ experiences of care and treatment,

We usually ask five key questions, however due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and to reduce time spent on site, only the following three questions were asked:

• Is it safe?

• Is it effective?

• Is it well-led?

These questions form the framework for the areas we look at during the inspection.

Our findings were:

  • The dental clinic was visibly clean and well-maintained.
  • The practice had infection control procedures which reflected published guidance.
  • Staff knew how to deal with medical emergencies. Appropriate medicines and life-saving equipment were available.
  • The practice had systems to help them manage risk to patients and staff.
  • Safeguarding processes were in place and staff knew their responsibilities for safeguarding vulnerable adults and children.
  • The practice had staff recruitment procedures which reflected current legislation.
  • The clinical staff provided patients’ care and treatment in line with current guidelines.
  • Patients were treated with dignity and respect and staff took care to protect their privacy and personal information.
  • Staff provided preventive care and supported patients to ensure better oral health.
  • The appointment system took account of patients’ needs.
  • There was effective leadership and a culture of continuous improvement.
  • Staff felt involved and supported and worked as a team.
  • Staff and patients were asked for feedback about the services provided.
  • Complaints were dealt with positively and efficiently.
  • The dental clinic had information governance arrangements.

Background

The Dental Practice, trading as Littlehampton Dental Care is in Littlehampton and provides NHS and private dental care and treatment for adults and children.

The practice is situated across three floors with surgeries located on the ground, first and second floor. Car parking spaces, including dedicated parking for disabled people, are available near the practice. Patients are informed of the access arrangements upon contacting the practice.

The dental team includes four dentists, one hygienist, two trainee dental nurses and one dental nurse awaiting registration, two receptionists and a practice manager. The practice has four treatment rooms.

During the inspection we spoke with three dentists, two trainee dental nurses, two receptionists and the practice manager. We looked at practice policies and procedures and other records about how the service is managed.

The practice is open:

Monday to Friday from 8.45am to 5.30pm

There were areas where the provider could make improvements. They should:

  • Implement audits for prescribing of antibiotic medicines taking into account the guidance provided by the College of General Dentistry.
  • Take action to ensure the service takes into account the needs of patients with disabilities and to comply with the requirements of the Equality Act 2010.

During a routine inspection

During our inspection we spoke with one dentist, four dental nurses and a hygienist. We spoke with four patients and looked at ten care records. We also observed one consultation.

Patients were happy with the care and treatment they received and felt well informed. One patient told us 'The dentist is brilliantly careful and very responsive and effective.' Another patient said 'They explain what is going on during treatment'.

Patient's needs were assessed and care and treatment was planned and delivered in line with their individual care plans. One patient told us 'They always give me a treatment plan.' This meant that patients received individualised oral care and treatment that they had agreed to.

We saw that the premises were visibly clean and tidy. Staff we spoke with spoke knowledgeably about the decontamination and sterilisation processes they used. All the patients we spoke with told us that the practice was always clean. One patient said 'The practice is always clean and tidy.'

We saw documentation which confirmed that all relevant staff employed by the service held current registrations with the General Dental Council (GDC). We also saw documents which confirmed that the service undertook checks with the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) for all staff. This meant that the service had taken reasonable steps to ensure staff were suitable to work with children and vulnerable adults.
