During a routine inspection
The nurses at the healthcare centre were provided by Bristol Community Health. Other professionals such as doctors, community psychiatric nurse and physiotherapist were managed by different providers. Although different aspects of healthcare in the prison were provided by different providers people using the service received a seamless service.
People asked appeared unaware that different providers were involved in providing their care at the prison. One person said 'Well it all works very well, you never have trouble seeing the right person. I usually go to see one of the nurses and if they think I need a different person they just make me an appointment with them.'
People spoken with showed a high level of satisfaction with the healthcare services offered at HMP Leyhill.
People said that they were fully involved in the planning of any treatment that they required. One person said 'They keep a close eye on me and I have a say in any treatment.' Another person told us 'They give advice and I make choices which suit me.'
People asked said that they were always treated with respect by the staff working in the healthcare centre. One person told us 'They always have time to listen in healthcare. Staff are always polite and respectful.'
People attending the centre said that the services were comprehensive and they did not have to wait long to see a nurse. One person said 'It's easy to get an appointment especially if it's urgent. If you're really ill they will come to your room.' One older person said that they had had a fall and commented 'A nurse came within minutes and arranged for me to go to hospital really quickly.'
People using the service described the nursing staff as 'Excellent and very professional,' 'Always very efficient' and 'Marvellous.'
