During a routine inspection

At the time of our visit we were told that the service provided personal care support to 120 people. We attempted to speak to 20 people who used the service and gained feedback from 17. We also spoke with three staff and the service manager and reviewed the records of eight people.

Everyone we spoke with without exception told us that they would recommend the service. They spoke very highly about how well they were cared for and told us they were happy with the service they received from both carers and the agency.

We found that the service asks for peoples consent before providing support and everyone we spoke with indicated they were in control of their care package.

Care was planned and delivered in line with individual care plans. Staff were knowledgeable and received training to support them.

We found that the provider had effective systems in place to ensure that medicines were managed effectively.

We saw that appropriate checks were undertaken before staff commenced working and the provider had effective systems in place to monitor and assess the quality of the service they provided.

During a routine inspection

We telephoned two people who used the service and spoke to two family members of other service users. Everyone we spoke to said they were happy with their regular support workers and gave us positive feedback about them.

People told us their regular care worker knew their needs well and how they liked things to be done. A person who used the service said about the care they received "the care staff are very good."

All the people we spoke to said that the agency arranged a replacement care worker when their regular care worker was away and almost all said that replacement care workers supplied were good. None of the people we spoke to said that they had ever had any concerns about the treatment they received from care workers. A service user told us "they are always very polite and respectful." Another service user told us "they are very respectful."

We found that the agency considered people's individual needs and circumstances when providing care. The staff at the agency reported that they felt well supported by the management team. We also found that the agency had policies and procedures in place to quality assure the services they provide to people.

The agency was acquired by Radian Support Care Attendant Scheme in 2012, and a service manager told us that the agency was in the process of a comprehensive review of service user care and staff support at the time of our inspection.
