Our view of the service

Date of Assessment: 5 and 6 November 2024. The service is a residential service providing support for up to 40 older people living with dementia and nursing needs. There were 37 people using the service at the time of our visit. At our last inspection the service was in breach of regulation relating to governance. At this inspection we found they were no longer in breach as the provider had systems in place to monitor and improve the quality and safety of the service. The service had exceptionally inclusive leaders who had the skills, knowledge, experience and credibility to lead effectively. The service had a very clear shared culture based on transparency, equity, equality and human rights, engagement, diversity and inclusion. They understood the challenges and the needs of people and their communities. The service was exceptional at making sure people were at the centre of their care. People were involved in planning and reviewing their care and understood their rights. Staff took time to find out what was unique about each person and strived to incorporate this into their lives. For example, some people had a specific ambition which staff endeavoured to support people achieve. The service had a strong proactive and positive culture of safety, lessons were always learnt to continually identify where improvements could be made and embed good practice. Staff always worked well across teams and services to support people to manage their health and wellbeing to fully maximise their independence, choice and control. Staff were proud to work at Pytchley Court Nursing Home, they said, “The team are lovely, we all support and respect each other. Without this and good communication we wouldn’t be able to provide good care” and “I’m proud of [registered manager] and [deputy manager] as they put everyone together.” The registered manager worked well with other organisations, such as taking part in research into dementia with universities.

People's experience of this service

People and relatives were overwhelmingly positive about their experience of living at the service. A person said, “I would have no problems recommending this place, I would say that it is a place with good care and that residents feel appreciated and free to live as they like.” People were involved in all aspects of their care and reviews and had good outcomes. A relative told us, “[Name] was ‘resident of the day’, that seems to be how they review the care plan and is a good way of keeping me involved and making sure everything is up to date.” The service was exceptional at promoting people’s independence, so people knew their rights and had choice and control over their own care, treatment and wellbeing. People’s privacy and dignity were respected and staff were exceptional at treating people with kindness, empathy and compassion. A person told us, “[Staff] are kind, they work hard, and they listen. They never make me uncomfortable.” People were seen as unique individuals with full lives and experiences. People took part in meaningful activities and experiences that reflected their lives. People told us, “What I like about staff here is that they do include everybody, no matter how able a person is they do try to help them to participate” and, “I’ve made this place my own, I have my own privacy.” A relative told us, “I’d say the social aspects of the home have been the biggest benefit [Name’s] got from being in the home.” People’s visitors were made to feel welcome, a relative told us, “[Staff] are approachable, I can’t praise them enough, they are welcoming, I can come anytime, regardless morning and night they are happy to see me.” Some people could not directly tell us about their experience. We used a structured observation tool to assess whether they received good care. This approach showed people were included and listened to and staff consistently interacted positively with them.
