Abbey Lane surgery re-registered with the Care Quality Commission on 4 January 2018 as a new provider under the name of Dr Qurat-ul-Ain Majoka.  Dr Majoka was the previous provider.  The practice is situated in the Woodseats area of Sheffield which has an Index of multiple deprivation score of 9 (1 = Most deprived 10= Least deprived).  The practice has a list size of 3,119 and is situated in a converted property across three floors which is currently being updated. There is no patient parking on site but street parking is available adjacent to the practice. The surgery offers clinics including; mental health care, smoking cessation and pre-natal clinics with the midwife. There is disabled access to the rear of the building and direct bus transport links to the city centre. There is one GP partner (female) and two salaried GPs (both female), one practice nurse (female) and a health care assistant (female). The practice is open at 8.15 am until 6pm on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday and between 8.15am and 4pm on Thursdays.  Extended surgery hours are offered through early morning or late evening appointments on alternate weeks on Wednesdays. Out of hours services are provided by 111 services if the practice is closed.

As this inspection was carried out shortly after the new registration took place, the data used throughout the report is existing data from the previous provider, Abbey Lane surgery.

We carried out an announced comprehensive inspection at Abbey Lane Surgery on 11 January 2018 as part of our inspection programme.

At this inspection we found:

• The practice had systems to manage risk so that safety incidents were less likely to happen. When incidents did happen, the practice learned from them and improved their processes.
• The practice reviewed the effectiveness and appropriateness of the care it provided. It ensured that care and treatment was delivered according to evidence based guidelines.
• Staff involved and treated patients with compassion, kindness, dignity and respect.
• Patients found the appointment system easy to use and reported that they were able to access care when they needed it.
• There was a focus on continuous learning and improvement across the organisation.

The areas where the provider should make improvements are:

• Carry out an infection control audit and complete any actions arisin needed.
