26 August 2020

During an inspection looking at part of the service

We carried out this announced desk-based review on 26 August 2020 under section 60 of the Health and Social Care Act 2008 as part of our regulatory functions in response to information of concern that was shared with us. We planned the review to check whether the registered provider was meeting the legal requirements in the Health and Social Care Act 2008 and associated regulations. The review was led by a Care Quality Commission (CQC) inspector who had remote access to a specialist dental adviser.

As part of this review we asked:

•Is it safe?

Our findings were:

Are services safe?

We found this practice was providing safe care in accordance with the relevant regulations.

Background

Didsbury Dental Practice is in Manchester and provides private dental care and treatment for adults and children.

The practice is owned by a company and as a condition of registration must have a person registered with the CQC as the registered manager. Registered managers have legal responsibility for meeting the requirements in the Health and Social Care Act 2008 and associated regulations about how the practice is run. The registered manager at Didsbury Dental Practice is a company director.

During the review we spoke with one dentist, two dental nurses, a receptionist and the practice manager. We looked at practice policies and procedures and other records about how the service is managed.

The practice is open:

Monday to Sunday 9am to 11pm

Our key findings were:

•The provider had infection control procedures which reflected published guidance.

•The provider had systems to help them manage risk to patients and staff.

•Standard operating procedures were in place to ensure staff followed national guidance to prevent the spread of coronavirus.

27 November 2013

During an inspection looking at part of the service

There were no patients at the surgery during our visit however it was not necessary to speak to people who used the service to assess the improvements made by the provider.

This was a follow-up visit to the Didsbury Dental Practice to check whether the provider had achieved the improvements that were found to be needed at the previous inspection in August 2013. At that inspection there was inadequate evidence to show that the vetting process for staff who worked at the surgery was robust. At this follow-up inspection visit we saw significant improvements had been made. We now saw that systems were in place to ensure suitable staff were employed and so the safety and wellbeing of people who used the service were promoted.

13 August 2013

During a routine inspection

People who used the service told us the dental practice provided them with enough information to make an informed choice about their treatment. We were told that this information included an explanation of the different stages, cost, and timescales for the different treatments.

We were told: 'He (the dentist) checked me and explained what may have happened. I was given some medicine and he said I don't need treatment now, but to wait and see because I'm feeling better than I was.'

And:

'My treatment and the costs have been fully explained and articulated by the dentist.'

We found that people were safe when they received treatment at the practice and systems were in place to deal with emergencies.

We saw that sufficient systems were in place to reduce the risk of cross infection.

We found that systems were in place to check the quality of the service provided.

We found that improvements were needed in relation to ensuring that suitable staff were employed at the practice.
