Our view of the service

Date of Assessment – 29 May to 18 June 2024. This was a responsive assessment in respect of intelligence CQC had received about the service and potential risk. During this assessment, four regulatory breaches were identified in respect of safe care and treatment, including medicines; staffing;, person centred care and good governance. People’s needs and risks were not adequately assessed or managed. Staff lacked accurate and up to date information on people’s needs and the care they required. Care was not always safely managed or delivered to ensure positive outcomes. The management and administration of medicines was unsafe and placed people at risk of serious harm. People’s care was not always tailored to their individual needs, wishes and preferences to promote person centred care. Learning from accidents and incidents were not effectively shared to prevent the risk of a similar accident or incident happening again. Staff reported they felt supported and trained. Staff were recruited safely, and staffing was sufficient. People had on site access to Occupational Therapy, Physiotherapy, Speech and Language Therapy and a Psychology team in support of their needs. A GP and a Consultant regularly reviewed people’s progress. The home was clean and well maintained. However, records showed staff supervision and appraisals were not up to date to monitor and support staff practice. The systems in place to monitor and improve the quality and safety of the service were also not robust.

People's experience of this service

Opportunities for us to speak with people were limited during this assessment. This was because only 3 people living in the home were able to speak with us. We gained additional feedback from two relatives. Most people told us they felt safe and well looked after. They said staff were kind, caring and respectful. Relatives confirmed this. People’s comments included, “Staff are very kind”; “The staff are very wonderful with him” and “The staff are so kind and funny. I am so grateful for them”. Most people felt they were kept informed about their care and were given a choice of how they lived their life in the home. People and relatives told us they received their medicines and had enough to eat and drink. People had mixed reviews about the quality of the meals provided. One person told us, “Enough, hot food and nice”, another said “It is edible. I would like a steak but obviously I can’t have one”. Most people felt staff were appropriately trained to support them and told us medical advice was sought quickly if they felt unwell. People told us the new manager in post was approachable and had no concerns about the service. Feedback from other health and social care professionals and commissioners was mostly positive.
