Independence, choice and control

Score: 2

Feedback from people was mixed; some people wanted more independent access to the garden and to going outside. Some people wanted more choices about meals and mealtimes, and about activities and everyday matters such as what to watch on tv, and where to watch it.

We saw the activities staff was very enthusiastic and keen to engage with people. Some of the activity provision was not appropriate as this was more aimed at young children, and these did not reflect people’s interests and choices. Staff gave people some choices, such as meals, drinks and where they wanted to be seated. We observed one incident, during which a member of staff took a jug from a person and poured their drink for them, which was well intended, but not supportive of the person’s independence.
