Badminton Place

Date of Assessment: 5 December 2024 to 23 January 2025.

Badminton Place is a care home for adults who may have physical, sensory or cognitive needs. This includes people who are living with dementia or who have nursing needs. Up to 73 people can live there. The service is in a modern, purpose-built property, and each floor is equipped and staffed to meet specific needs.

We carried out this assessment because concerns about the service were brought to the attention of the Care Quality Commission (CQC). We assessed quality statements in the safe, responsive and well-led key questions. At the last inspection, the service was rated outstanding in the responsive and well led key questions and overall. The ratings for the key questions we assessed are now good. The ratings for the key questions we did not assess remain good, and the service is now rated good overall.

People received safe care, and staff understood their needs and preferences well. Care plans gave staff guidance to support people safely. Staff managed risks and met people’s health and wellbeing needs. The attractive environment supported people’s wellbeing and quality of life.

People, relatives and staff were encouraged to give feedback. Changes were made as a result of comments and suggestions.

Following concerns which were raised about the service, there had been staff changes at all levels. The current team were positive, motivated and committed to providing a good service. A new management team had worked with staff to make changes and the staff we met were caring and committed to providing high quality care. Staff, people and their relatives were positive about the current leadership of the service. Managers were visible, knowledgeable and supported staff. There were enough staff, and they received training and supervision to ensure they were skilled and competent in their roles. The management team carried out quality assurance checks to ensure good care and safe treatment were provided.

We spoke with people who used the service and their relatives about their experience of the care provided. Some people could not directly tell us about their experiences. We spent time at the service and used a structured observation tool to help us understand everyone’s experience and assess whether they received good care. We saw people being included and listened to and staff interactions with people were positive.

People and their relatives gave good feedback about living in the service. They told us they felt safe and well supported by staff who knew and understood their needs, likes and preferences. People were encouraged to maintain their skills and abilities, and a wide range of activities and events supported this. Most people gave positive feedback about the quality of meals and food choices. Families and friends were welcome at the service.

Most relatives felt well informed and able to speak with staff if there were concerns or changes. The relatives we spoke with told us they had been involved in reviewing assessments and care plans. One relative did not feel staff communicated with them sufficiently.

Relatives knew the management team and found them to be available and approachable. Relatives and people who lived at Badminton Place were positive about the recent management and staffing changes and felt the service had recently ‘significantly improved’.
