During a routine inspection
During this inspection Longreach hospital was undergoing a major environmental adaptation and refurbishment of the premises. The operation of Cove ward had been moved to Bodmin hospital. Bay ward which provided care, treatment and accommodation for 30 patients had been split into two wards. the ward was located on both the ground floor and on the first floor and provided care, treatment and accommodation for 30 patients in total. Staffing levels had been reviewed to ensure sufficient staff were on duty on both wards at all times.
Patients and staff we spoke with during the inspection were aware of the changes to the environment and were positive about the proposed changes to be made to the ward.
Patients told us they received 'good' care and staff were 'spot on' in meeting their particular care needs. Patients experienced care, treatment and support that met their needs and protected their rights. Patients were also complimentary regarding the staff who worked with them.
Patients were in the main complimentary about the food provided.
Patients were protected against the risks associated with medicines because the provider had appropriate arrangements in place to manage medicines.
Staff told us that they had attended appropriate training to ensure their skills were updated. In addition they felt supported by the senior management team and told us if they had any concerns these would be listened to and acted upon.
The majority of patients we spoke with during the inspection told us that if they had a complaint or a concern they felt they would be able to speak to a member of staff.

Most people on Bay Ward said staff were supportive and the care they received was good. Most people said they were happy with the accommodation and the food, although there were some concerns about communal areas being noisy, and a minority did not like the food. Some people on Bay Ward also raised concerns about the attitude of a minority of staff. We reported these to management. Some people also said staff were very busy, and some would promise to help them later, and /or promise to provide them with information; but did not follow these things through. People found this frustrating and could in respect of some cases make people very anxious if it was an important matter.
