During a routine inspection

At the time of our visit there were 33 patients across two hospital wards. A small number of people were detained under the Mental Health Act. As part of our inspection we spoke with seven patients in order to gain their views and experiences of the service. We also spoke with a member of the management team and nine clinical staff. Some people were unable to verbally express their views to us so we carried out a period of observation to determine the interactions and engagements between staff and patients. We saw that there were many examples of positive interactions between people and staff and noted that most people appeared to be relaxed and at ease. People spoke highly of staff. One person told us that "Staff are busy but always do their best for us" and "Staff are very good".

Most people told us that they were satisfied with the care and treatment provided. However, we found that people had not always been involved in the decisions regarding their care or were not fully supported to live as independently as possible.

We found that people's risk assessments had not been incorporated into their plan of care in order to provide guidance for staff to protect people from receiving care that was inappropriate or unsafe.

We found that people were not always supported by enough staff who were suitably qualified and skilled.

The service had not completed the appropriate checks in order to maintain a safe and suitable environment for people.

During a routine inspection

Relatives were full of admiration for the work of staff on Albert ward. They praised the cleanliness and food. On all wards patients, including detained patients and detained patients who did not believe they should be there felt the staff were caring and considerate. Generally patients said that they were involved in their treatments. They felt safe at the hospital.
