Safe
Staff and patients told us staffing had improved. Patients told us there were enough staff to meet their needs and they were able to attend activities on and off the ward. We saw staff were engaged with patients and were able to escort them off the wards to attend off ward activities and to access fresh air. Appropriate processes were in place to plan staffing and where required contingency plans were in place to ensure safe staffing levels were met.

Safe and effective staffing
Patients told us staffing had improved. They told us staff were around when they needed them, there were enough staff to meet their needs and they were able to attend activities on and off the ward. Staff were occasionally moved to other wards where required but this did not impact on their care needs.
Staff told us that staffing had improved but still not there yet. They told us that shifts are not always fully staffed and that staff are asked to move around the wards to support gaps. They told us minimum and safe staffing levels were reached most days, but at times to achieve this staff were transferred from other wards.
We saw patients who were prescribed staff observation levels were being met. Staff were around to support patients’ needs. We observed patients being escorted off the wards to attend off ward activities and to access fresh air. Staff on the ward engaged with patients and interactions did not seem rushed.
We saw on ward shift planners in place showing how staff are arranged to make sure all duties are covered. It also showed if other staff were needed and where they needed to fit into the plan when they arrived on the wards. We saw that a staff contingency process is still in pace with the site management team to ensure staffing levels are met.
