Person-centred Care

Score: 4

The feedback from relatives showed staff worked in an extremely positive person centred way with the people they supported. One relative said, “It’s unbelievable, how they read [Name] so well. Another relative said, “They (staff) so understand [Name]. [Name] can be very anxious and they are so less anxious now.” Relatives told us they were very happy with the way their family members were supported by staff. A further relative said, “We looked carefully to find the right place. We’re very happy with it.” Relatives told us staff managed family visits and contact with their family members extremely well. For example people liked to arrange visits in a very personalised way. One relative told us their family member enjoyed seeing them but liked to incorporate the visit with another activity and staff managed this well. They said, “They (staff) will facilitate these things and are keen to do as much as they can.” Some people responded well to a specific gender of staff and relatives told us staff made sure they accommodated this. Relatives felt staff worked hard to provide people with excellent person centred care.

The registered manager gave further feedback on how the staff had supported one person and their family’s visits. They told us of how incorporating a trip within the relative’s visit had increased the enjoyment of the visit for both parties. They told us it was really lovely to see the relative being able to simply be a parent and enjoy their family member’s company. When asked if the registered manager would be happy for a member of their own family to be cared for at the service they said, “Yes I would, the amount of stuff the individuals do and the opportunities they have are second to none. We try to make sure people are integrated into the local community.” A member of staff we spoke with said, “It's all about the individuals and what they want and their individual needs.” They went on to say they felt staff achieved this at the service. A further member of staff told us they felt providing person centred care was about, ‘Making people’s dreams come alive and making positive things happen for people.’

Throughout our visit we saw people being supported in an exceptional person centred way. Staff followed the guidance in people’s care plans to ensure they received personalised care, and knew people’s needs and interests. We saw evidence of how one person’s anxieties had decreased significantly over the period of time the person had lived at the service. Although the person still became anxious, staff had clear strategies in place to manage this and had been able to increase the person’s day to day life experiences. For some people the provider had used smart technology to assist them undertake activities they enjoyed. One person enjoyed prepping food but lacked dexterity, staff had obtained a device known as a smart switch, which could be used to allow the person to safely and easily operate a food mixer. This meant the person could take part in an activity they really enjoyed. One person had recently been supported to move from the main house to a self-contained apartment within the service. The person still enjoyed taking their meals in the main house but also enjoyed the independence of their own apartment. Some people enjoyed helping to prepare meals and others setting the table. The provider also supported people’s social experiences by holding a range of social activities at their hub. People attended different activities depending on their likes. We saw there was a program of events for people to attend should they want to. Staff worked continually to promote people’s independence through the wide range of activities they offered. For example supporting people to use public transport when out on trips.
