Equity in experiences and outcomes
Managers and staff understood people’s needs and rights and how important it was for them to live the best lives they could. Staff understood the importance of treating people as individuals and allowing them to make decisions where possible. On the whole relatives said they were listened to, although some mentioned that communication and engagement from management and staff was mixed.
Staff, and relatives spoke to us about recent changes which had led some of them to feel they were not being listened to or engaged with as they had been previously. The registered manager told us there had been some merging of professional boundaries which had been identified, and action was being taken to address it. Staff said they were not aware of any discriminatory practices and would report it if they were. Staff recognised the importance of learning people’s individual communication style to ensure they could be understood and involved. There was an awareness of the need to make reasonable adjustments, and examples were given of involving advocacy and relatives as part of multi-disciplinary teams to ensure people had access to dentistry.
Processes were in place to seek feedback, such as surveys, regular family communication and staff meetings. It had been recognised by the provider that some family members and staff hadn’t always felt listened to and action was being taken to address this. Care plans supported people being independent, where possible, although at times lacked some detail. The staff understood the importance of equality and diversity.
