This key question has been rated good. This meant people were safe and protected from avoidable harm. Systems were in place to manage safeguarding incidents and staff were trained in safeguarding people from abuse. Risk assessments were in place to reduce people's risk of harm. Care plans provided staff with an overview of people's care needs. Sufficient numbers of staff were deployed, who received regular supervisions and training.

Safeguarding

People told us they felt safe living at Royal Manor. One person told us, “I feel very safe and secure here.” And another person told us, “The staff are lovely, and I do feel safe here.” One person’s relative told us “I have no worries about my relative’s safety. All of the staff are lovely and seem very caring.”

The registered manager told us how they managed safeguarding concerns, this was in line with best practice and involved notifying other agencies.

We observed staff to treat people in a respectful way throughout our visit. Staff spent time with people talking and listening to them.

Safeguarding incidents were reported, recorded and investigated. The registered manager analysed accidents and incidents to identify any emerging themes or patterns in order to improve the care provided. Risks which affected people's daily lives were recorded and known by staff. Risks were regularly assessed, and action taken as needed to ensure people were supported in a safe and consistent way.

Involving people to manage risks

People told us they felt safe, and staff knew them well. People confirmed they were involved in their care planning and that staff listened and supported them with their needs.

The registered manager confirmed people, and their relatives were involved in their reviews of care and that they were kept up to date with any changes.

We saw staff promoted people’s independence safely and attended to them promptly when they needed assistance.

Risks to people were assessed, and measures were in place to reduce risk. This ensured people received care and support in a consistent and safe way.

Safe and effective staffing

People told us there were enough staff available to them when needed. One person said, “ The staff here go above and beyond. They have done so much for me; they are so supportive.” Another told us, “I can’t fault the staff they know me well and how I like things to be done and they are good at their job.”

The registered manager monitored staffing levels and ensured there was a satisfactory skill mix in the service every day.

We saw staff were available throughout the home and when people needed support, the staff were on hand to provide it.

The provider operated safe recruitment processes. This included undertaking appropriate checks with the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) and obtaining suitable references. DBS checks provide information including details about convictions and cautions held on the Police National Computer. The information helps employers make safer recruitment decisions.

Medicines optimisation

Score: 3

People were supported by trained staff to take their medicines as prescribed. One person told us, “The staff have helped me sort out my medicines since I came here. I get all my medicines at the right time.”

The registered manager ensured medicines were safely managed, this involved staff training and competency checks. Any errors identified through audits were acted upon. This ensured lessons were learnt and improvements made, to mitigate the risk of future incidents.

Medicines were administered safely, and staff followed the policies and procedures in place.
