Caring – this means we looked for evidence that the service involved people and treated them with compassion, kindness, dignity and respect. At our last inspection we rated this key question good. At this inspection the rating has remained good. This meant people felt well-supported, cared for or treated with dignity and respect.

Kindness, compassion and dignity

The service always treated people with kindness, empathy and compassion and respected their privacy and dignity. Staff treated colleagues from other organisations with kindness and respect. People told us staff were kind, caring and respected their privacy. Comments included, “Very kind and caring staff, can’t complain at all, always respectful”, “They all know me well certainly respect my dignity” and “Kind and caring all of them, they all say they enjoy visiting me”. One professional told us, “One of my allocated clients spoke highly about their carer. During my encounter with the carers, they showed genuine concerns for their clients as well as respect for them.”

Treating people as individuals

The service treated people as individuals and made sure people’s care, support and treatment met people’s needs and preferences. They took account of people’s strengths, abilities, aspirations, culture and unique backgrounds and protected characteristics. Care plans were comprehensive and personalised to people's individual needs. A professional told us they were impressed with the way staff appeared to know the individual when they visited.

Independence, choice and control

The service promoted people’s independence, so people knew their rights and had choice and control over their own care, treatment and wellbeing. People were encouraged to maintain their existing skills to encourage their independence. Care plans identified what people could do and what support they needed. One person told us, “They encourage me to do as much for myself as possible, I feel more confident these days”. A relative told us “Carers do encourage and support [family member]”.

Responding to people’s immediate needs

The service listened to and understood people’s needs, views and wishes. Staff responded to people’s needs in the moment and acted to minimise any discomfort, concern or distress. One person told us, “I know all of the carers, I feel very safe with them in my home, treat them like friends, they know if I feel a bit down, all very kind, not one I don’t like, no abuse, all very polite.” A professional told us “The staff know their clients very well and often are able to encourage someone out of a bout of anxiety and depression by using chat they know the client will engage with. I have been present on numerous occasions where I have witnessed staff talk to and treat their clients with the utmost dignity and respect.”

Workforce wellbeing and enablement

The service cared about and promoted the wellbeing of their staff, and supported and enabled staff to always deliver person-centred care through numerous processes including supervision, training, and a ‘worker of the month’ process. This was confirmed by staff who told us, “Our organisation supports staff well-being by offering training, mental health support, and manageable workloads. It promotes work-life balance, encourages open communication, and recognizes achievements. Ensuring a safe, respectful workplace with clear policies helps prevent burnout and improve job satisfaction and retention” and “Having been recruited from abroad, I received help in arranging my travel, settling in adjusting to new working culture and new environment. The support has been ongoing, through Supervision, I get to speak on issues that may affect my well-being and have them addressed”.
