Well-led
The provider championed an inclusive and positive culture of continuous improvement. Staff supported people in a person-centred way. Leaders supported staff and collaborated with partners to deliver care that was safe, integrated, person-centred and sustainable, and to reduce inequalities. The home had a supportive, empowering, and inclusive culture where equality and diversity of the people receiving care, as well as the staff team was respected and celebrated. Leaders were exceptionally approachable, supportive and visible, and worked in an open and transparent way. The management of the service had a good understanding of their responsibilities and maintained oversight of the care provision.
This service scored 75 (out of 100) for this area. Find out what we look at when we assess this area and How we calculate these scores.
Staff and the management team told us how they all worked to ensure an inclusive culture in the home where people felt at ease and at home. One staff member said, "It is like a family - the staff and the residents, even the families. They are very supportive. They come and join us in activities." All staff we spoke with were positive and passionate about supporting people in a caring, respectful, person-centered approach. We saw evidence of this in our observations.
The registered manager and wider management team regularly spoke with staff through a variety of correspondence including informal chats about the culture of the home they wanted to promote. This was shown through training and inductions also. This was noted through our reviews as well as comments from relatives. One relative said, “The atmosphere is great and the results of the good care [service user] receives are obvious.”
Capable, compassionate and inclusive leaders
All staff spoken with spoke positively of the support the registered manager and management team provided to them. Staff told us, "If there are some issues they will come. Someone is there always if we need them."; “The manager is very supportive if I need anything.” Staff also told us the management team had encouraged staff to train for other roles within the company. One staff member said, "They support the staff to progress if they want to."
The registered manager and the management team were visible in the home and people and relatives knew them well. People and relatives were seen to speak with them on first name basis and they had a wide knowledge of individual people living in the home. Staff, people and their relatives provided us with positive feedback of how available the management team were all the time. A relative said, “[Registered manager] and [regional manager] who is here quite a lot, I know them both well. They are both very approachable and make a point of saying hello to my mum when she visits. The management are vey visible and always available. I get the feeling staff are well managed and they know what they’re doing. They seem well supported. I get the general feeling the staff are very on it and speak to the managers and they all speak to each other. I feel the communication is good. They have their roles and routine and know what to do.”
Freedom to speak up
Staff were positive when speaking about how they felt comfortable to raise anything with the registered manager or the management team. Staff members said, "If we have any concern, we can go to them."; “If any concerns go and speak with manager, they will listen about the concern, work out what it is and implement the plan as per the needs, if it need to improve they do this.”
The provider had training and a policy for whistleblowing. This had clear advice and guidance for staff to support them to speak up whenever required. This also detailed what to expect of the management team and what staff needed to do if they were not satisfied the concern had been addressed.
Workforce equality, diversity and inclusion
The registered manager and the management team had ensured staff felt valued whilst working for the provider as well as comfortable to discuss any topics with them. One staff member said, "They [the management team] talk about any changes, are staff comfortable working here, does the staff have any concerns or any issues. If it is a personal matter, you can go to them after the meeting and speak to them; they give us that choice."
The provider had clear and supportive policies around equality, diversity, reasonable adjustments and staff support. We saw that these policies had been implemented in the home successfully.
Governance, management and sustainability
The registered manager, senior staff and management team could clearly explain their roles and responsibilities. They also explained how various governance systems worked within the home. Staff told us about regular meetings to ensure they were working in line with the provider’s governance structures. One staff member said, “We have got the heads of department meetings every day. We share all the important information about the residents.”
Governance systems in the home were robust and effective in managing sustainability of implemented standards in the home. We saw examples of a number of audits completed by senior staff, the registered manager and the management team. These audits were completed regularly and any actions addressed in a timely way. Audits that were in place included ensuring all up to date information was in people’s individual care plans and messages of any changes had been shared with the staffing team.
