Independence, choice and control
People spoke positively of support they received to maintain their independence and were complimentary of the staff team. People’s comments included, "[The staff] are always trying to involve me in the shower. They say: 'Do what you can do'….”, “The girls are so good. Every single one of them", "I'm quite independent. I do get choices and I am in control” and “If they see something [extra] that needs doing they automatically do it [for example, taking the rubbish out]”. Relatives told us, "[My relative's] a stickler for routines and has told the girls this. They do it with a smile and a sense of humour."
Staff understood the importance of respecting people’s decisions and told us they always sought consent before providing care.
People’s care plans included information about topics of conversation they were likely to enjoy. This information helped staff to build relationships with people during their initial care visits. The local authority often agreed visit times on individual’s behalf with care providers to facilitate discharges from hospital. Where visit times commissioned with Stennack Homecare did not meet with people’s specific preferences, the service worked with people to understand their needs and make appropriate changes.
