Caring
People received care from staff in a dignified and respectful way. Staff understood the need to treat people as individuals and understood people’s preferences around care.

Kindness, compassion and dignity
People and relatives told us staff were caring and respectful. One person told us, “They’re genuine people [staff], not just making a few bob, you can see they really care.” One relative told us, “The (staff) on the whole are very friendly and chatty with (family member).”
Staff understood how to ensure people were treated with kindness and respect. One told us, “I would always draw the curtains and close the door. I would make sure they are understanding everything I am going to do.”
Treating people as individuals
People fed back their individual preferences around care was provided by staff and relatives also confirmed this. One person told us, “10 times out of 10 they do the same routine.”
Staff understood the importance treating people as individuals supporting people to remain as independent as they can be. One told us, “It is why we are support workers. We always encourage people’s independence. They make their own decisions and choices.”
We saw care plans contained detailed information around people’s preferences around their care. This included what people preferred to be called, they time they wanted their call and what family members needed to be consulted in relation to their care. The care plans included information on how the person was able to communicate to ensure staff understood their needs.
