Independence, choice and control
A relative told us that staff encouraged the person to be as independent as possible. The person decided what they wanted to do each day and staff enabled them to do this. Staff understood the person's communication needs well, so understood their wants and wishes when they were expressed.
The service had a policy regarding mental capacity. The person had capacity and therefore did not have any documentation or processes related to supported decisions. Staff and the registered manager had all received mental capacity training and understood how it related to the person. This was reviewed regularly. The registered manager sought feedback to ensure independence, choice and control was promoted at all times.
Staff were able to give examples of how they promoted independence when supporting the person. They understood the person's mental capacity and communication needs well. The registered manager demonstrated sound knowledge of the Mental Capacity Act. Even though some parts were not relevant to the person's care, they were able to discuss how they might support the person if their needs changed with regard to decision making.
