People’s communication needs were assessed before a care package commenced to ensure they were fully supported to understand their rights and able to make decisions about their care. Care plans contained up to date information about people’s needs including their choices and preferences. There was detailed information for staff to follow to promote people’s independence in areas such as mobility and managing their medicines.

People confirmed they were encouraged and supported to be involved in the care panning process and empowered to make choices about their care, ensuring their independence was maintained. One person spoke about how they had been supported to leave their flat and go out independently. They said, "The carers have been fabulous at supporting me. They encourage me to do as much as I can. I don’t feel they are overprotective, and they allow me the freedom to make choices about my care and how I want it." A relative told us, "[Family member] has [health condition]. The carers are very good at making sure that [family member] stays as independent as possible but also making sure they stay safe at the same time. They have worked hard to keep [family members] independence." One person had wanted to resume riding their bike. They had been supported by the staff to do this which resulted in the person raising money for charity through their bike riding.

Staff supported people to be independent and encouraged them to do as much as they could for themselves. One member of staff said, “We ensure personalised care by offering options and choices at all times.” Another staff member said, "We take pride in what we do for people. We treat people how we would want to be treated." A staff member told us, “I always make sure that I explain what I want to do and ask [person] if that’s okay. I respect their decision when they say no.”
