We carried out an announced comprehensive inspection at Windmill Surgery on 17 August 2018. We inspected the practice as part of our inspection programme.
At this inspection we found:
- The practice is one of three practices managed by the provider Coastal Villages Practice, there was a clear leadership structure and staff felt supported by management. The practice ensured that communication across all seven sites, including Windmill Surgery, was clear and defined.
- The practice had clear systems to manage risk so that safety incidents were less likely to happen. When incidents did happen, the practice learned from them and improved their processes.
- The practice routinely reviewed the effectiveness and appropriateness of the care it provided. It ensured that care and treatment was delivered according to evidence- based guidelines. We saw evidence that the practice had identified and improved their performance from 2016/2017 in relation to some of the quality and outcome framework indicators.
- Staff involved and treated patients with compassion, kindness, dignity and respect.
- Patients found the appointment system easy to use and reported that they were able to access care when they needed it.
- The practice had widened the skill mix within the practice and had advance nurse practitioners, a pharmacist and emergency care practitioner offering appointments and home visits to patients.
- We found the dispensary to be well managed.
- There was a strong focus on continuous learning and improvement at all levels of the organisation.
