Independence, choice and control
We spoke with 2 staff who felt that as a small home this benefited the people that lived there as this enabled a more personalised approach. They explained, and gave examples of how they promoted people's independence and choice. The registered manager told us the home had a varied activity programme, which included the community coming into the home. This included musicians, people visiting with animals and exercise classes.
Care provided in the home was very personalised. Staff promoted person centred care to make sure everyone received a level of care to meet their needs and respected their wishes and independence. Care plans viewed contained quotes from people around what they would like to achieve, and also detailed people’s wishes in relation to independence.
People were able to make choices and carry on with their usual routines, with staff respecting these choices. They told us, “There are no rules. We do what we want, my family come and pop in all the time and take me out”, ‘I’m a very late person going to bed, no problem with that” and “Can make choices get up at 8am they bring me up a cup of tea”. Relatives told us they were involved and included within their loved ones care. Visiting relatives said there were no restrictions on visiting and they were able to come and go as they pleased. One relative told us, “Keeps me very much informed, they phone and speak to us, sends me pictures, if I can’t get here what's app video with mum which they do, we are consulted and discussed with, very inclusive”.
